She told them how moving it was to be under the Arch of Titus, and to see the relief that shows the Menorah and the only altar of the true God being carried in a pagan triumph, <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" align=\"middle\" width=\"318\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artlex.com\/ArtLex\/a\/images\/arch_titus.relief.lg.jpg\" height=\"402\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">and to see the medals that were struck to commemorate the war:<span>\u00a0 <\/span><em>Judea Capta<\/em>, possibly made from the melted down Menorah.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" align=\"middle\" width=\"243\" src=\"http:\/\/wandering-jew.com\/userimages\/capta.jpg\" height=\"243\" \/><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><o:p><font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p> <font face=\"Times New Roman\">They lamented that there had never been peace in the <st1:place w:st=\"on\">Middle East<\/st1:place>.<\/font><o:p><font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">She replied that she had also seen the new installation the Ara Pacis, which was built Augustus. It has rather a charming relief of the whole family, including the imperial children, in procession to the altar of peace.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" align=\"middle\" width=\"500\" src=\"http:\/\/web.mac.com\/heraklia\/Augustus\/PrivateMan\/graphics\/AraPacis.jpg\" height=\"333\" \/><\/p>\n<p><o:p><font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p> <font face=\"Times New Roman\">They were then surprised that there had been any peace at all. My wife then began, \u201c<span style=\"color: #001320\">Now it came to pass in those days, there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be enrolled.\u201d <\/span>She said you could hear a pin drop.\u00a0<\/font><o:p><font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p> <font face=\"Times New Roman\">As Plutarch says:<\/font><o:p><font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p> <font face=\"Times New Roman\">Janus also has a temple at <st1:city w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Rome<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> with double doors, which they call the gates of war; for the temple always stands open in time of war, but is closed when peace has come. The latter was a difficult matter, and it rarely happened, since the realm was always engaged in some war, as its increasing size brought it into collision with the barbarous nations which encompassed it round about. But in the time of Augustus it was closed, after he had overthrown Marc Antony\u2026<\/font><o:p><font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">I thought it was a commonplace, but apparently not everyone knows that there was a period pf peace when Christ was born. As <st1:city w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Milton<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> says in his Hymn on the Morning of Christ\u2019s Nativity,<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">But he her fears to cease,<br \/>\nSent down the meek-eyd Peace,<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0She crown&#8217;d with Olive green, came softly sliding<br \/>\nDown through the turning sphear<br \/>\nHis ready Harbinger,<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0With Turtle wing the amorous clouds dividing,<br \/>\nAnd waving wide her mirtle wand,<br \/>\nShe strikes a universall Peace through Sea and Land. <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Times New Roman\">No War, or Battails sound<br \/>\nWas heard the World around,<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The idle spear and shield were high up hung;<br \/>\nThe hooked Chariot stood<br \/>\nUnstain&#8217;d with hostile blood,<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The Trumpet spake not to the armed throng,<br \/>\nAnd Kings sate still with awfull eye,<br \/>\nAs if they surely knew their sovran Lord was by.<\/font><\/p>\n<div id=\"themify_builder_content-12\" data-postid=\"12\" class=\"themify_builder_content themify_builder_content-12 themify_builder themify_builder_front\">\r\n\t<\/div>\r\n<!-- \/themify_builder_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My wife was telling her garden club friends about our fall trip to Rome.
