H<\/span>erbert Lackner writing in the Austrian newsmagazine Profil <\/a>is shocked, shocked, to discover that Cardinal Sch\u00f6nborn is Catholic and supports the teachings of the papacy (whose current occupant happens to be his professor at Regensburg and I believe his dissertation director).\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In March 2008 he spoke to priests of the neocatechumate.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

His theme: the fall of the birth rate in Europe. Sch\u00f6nborn described three reasons for this: the abortion law that was liberalized in the 1970s, the increasing tendency to government recognition of homosexual partnerships, and contraception. In regard to the last themes Sch\u00f6nborn made his predecessors responsible: it as a sin that the Austrian bishops\u2019 conference in 1968 in the Mariatroster Explanation said a strong No to the anti-pill encyclical of Pope Paul Vi. One did not have the courage to say Yes.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Sein Thema: der R\u00fcckgang der Geburtenraten in Europa. Drei Gr\u00fcnde machte Sch\u00f6nborn daf\u00fcr aus: die in den siebziger Jahren liberalisierten Abtreibungsgesetze, die zunehmende Tendenz zur staatlichen Anerkennung von homosexuellen Partnerschaften und die Empf\u00e4ngnisverh\u00fctung. Beim letzten Thema machte Sch\u00f6nborn auch seine Vorg\u00e4nger mitverantwortlich: Es sei eine \u201eS\u00fcnde\u201c gewesen, dass die \u00f6sterreichische Bischofskonferenz 1968 in der so genannten \u201eMariatroster Erkl\u00e4rung\u201c \u201eNein\u201c zur strengen Antibabypillen-Enzyklika von Papst Paul VI. gesagt habe. Man habe \u201enicht den Yes.Mut gehabt, Ja zu sagen\u201c.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Sch\u00f6nborn had to backtrack on his criticism of the bishops, but it seems undeniable that the acceptance of abortion and contraception by Austrian Catholics has led to a catastophic decline in the birth rate (I doubt that hosmoexuality\u00a0is a cause of\u00a0the decline).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Young Austrians are more anti-immigrant than older Austrians, according to Carl Djerassi (\u201e<\/span>Warum wir bald sehr alt ausschauen<\/span>,\u201c Der Standard<\/a>, December 13, 2008) one of the inventors of the pill, but young Austrians don\u2019t want to have children. Something has to give.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
