{"id":157,"date":"2009-02-11T14:43:23","date_gmt":"2009-02-11T20:43:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.podles.org\/dialogue\/?p=157"},"modified":"2009-02-11T14:44:29","modified_gmt":"2009-02-11T20:44:29","slug":"huck-finn-in-quebec","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.podles.org\/dialogue\/huck-finn-in-quebec-157.htm","title":{"rendered":"Huck Finn in Qu\u00e9bec"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">As I noted in my book <em>The Church Impotent,<\/em> the Christian churches and the schools are both female oriented, and boys, especially blue-collar boys, <span> <\/span>do not like to go to them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">In Quebec, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.montrealgazette.com\/News\/Quebec+must+find+keep+boys+school\/1275584\/story.html\">Montr\u00e9al Gazette r<\/a>eports<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">It is mainly boys who drop out and in Quebec, they are mostly French-speaking. Before coming to power in 2003, the Liberal government promised to improve this grim situation, but in fact the dropout rate in the province has gotten worse, not better.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">In 2000, 26 per cent of students in public secondary schools left without graduating. By 2008, that rate rose to 29 per cent. Among Quebec&#8217;s boys, the figure is 35 per cent. In poor neighbourhoods the proportion reaches dizzying heights: Six per cent of Westmount students drop out; in neighbouring Point St. Charles, the rate is six times as high.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">This situation, at least in schools, is not irremediable.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">At the same time that Quebec&#8217;s dropout rate is climbing, Ontario&#8217;s has been falling. Today, for every 100 Ontario dropouts, Quebec has 137.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">and<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Finland&#8217;s dropout rate is a mere four per cent.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The problems of boys in inner-city American schools are not just racial, and the solutions may be out there \u2013 if anyone were interested.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"themify_builder_content-157\" data-postid=\"157\" class=\"themify_builder_content themify_builder_content-157 themify_builder themify_builder_front\">\r\n\t<\/div>\r\n<!-- \/themify_builder_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As I noted in my book The Church Impotent, the Christian churches and the schools are both female oriented, and boys, especially blue-collar boys, do not like to go to them.
