Raniero Cantalamessa, who holds the office of preacher of the papal household, delivered his remarks in the traditional prayer service in St. Peter\u2019s Basilica. Wearing the brown cassock of a Franciscan, Father Cantalamessa took note that Easter and<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><a title=\"More articles about Passover.\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/reference\/timestopics\/subjects\/p\/passover\/index.html?inline=nyt-classifier\"><span style=\"color: #004276;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Passover<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>were falling during the same week this year, saying he was led to think of the Jews. \u201cThey know from experience what it means to be victims of collective violence and also because of this they are quick to recognize the recurring symptoms,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 12pt; line-height: 17.6pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Father Cantalamessa quoted from what he said was a letter from an unnamed Jewish friend. \u201cI am following the violent and concentric attacks against the church, the pope and all the faithful by the whole word,\u201d he said the friend wrote. \u201cThe use of stereotypes, the passing from personal responsibility and guilt to a collective guilt, remind me of the more shameful aspects of anti-Semitism.\u201d<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 12pt; line-height: 17.6pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Father Lombardi, the spokesman for the pope, is running for cover:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 12pt; line-height: 17.6pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Father Lombardi said that he personally did not think that criticism of the church could be compared to anti-Semitism.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 12pt; line-height: 17.6pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u201cI don\u2019t think it\u2019s an appropriate comparison,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s why the letter should be read as a letter of solidarity by a Jew.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 12pt; line-height: 17.6pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">The chief Rabbi of Rome was astonished:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 12pt; line-height: 17.6pt;\"><span class=\"apple-style-span\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Rabbi Riccardo di Segni, the chief rabbi of Rome, who hosted Benedict at the Rome synagogue in January on a visit that helped calm waters after a year of tensions, laughed in seeming disbelief when asked about Father Cantalamessa\u2019s remarks.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 12pt; line-height: 17.6pt;\"><span class=\"apple-style-span\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">\u201cWith a minimum of irony, I will say that today is Good Friday, when they pray that the Lord illuminate our hearts so we recognize Jesus,\u201d Rabbi Di Segni said, referring to a prayer in a traditional Catholic liturgy calling for the conversion of the Jews. \u201cWe also pray that the Lord illuminate theirs.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 12pt; line-height: 17.6pt;\"><span class=\"apple-style-span\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">At the Holy Thursday liturgy in Baltimore, Archbishop Edwin O\u2019Brien began well when he talked about how scoundrels had disgraced the priesthood, but warmed to his topic when he lambasted newspapers for criticizing bishops and the pope.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 12pt; line-height: 17.6pt;\"><span class=\"apple-style-span\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">I see, abuse of children that wrecked their lives and drive some to suicide is parallel to criticism in the press that upsets a cleric.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 12pt; line-height: 17.6pt;\"><span class=\"apple-style-span\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">As O\u2019Brien spoke, I thought of the plagues: \u201cand the Lord hardened Pharaoh\u2019s heart\u201d \u2013 and the archbishop\u2019s. O\u2019Brien\u2019s and Cantalamessa\u2019s remarks are stunning demonstration of clerical narcissism. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div><span class=\"apple-style-span\"><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"apple-style-span\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 12pt; line-height: 17.6pt;\"><span class=\"apple-style-span\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Jewish leaders and sexual abuse victims are \u2013 I can\u2019t imagine why &#8211;\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/europe\/8601084.stm \">taking offense<\/a>:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"line-height: 17.6pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Stephan Kramer, general-secretary of Germany&#8217;s Central Council of Jews, described the remarks as offensive and repulsive. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 17.6pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">&#8220;So far I haven&#8217;t seen St Peter&#8217;s burning, nor were there outbursts of violence against Catholic priests,&#8221; he said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 17.6pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">&#8220;I&#8217;m without words.
