For all mothers, by Jane Peppler on\u00a0Pratie Place<\/a><\/p>\n

It is the day of all the year,
\nOf all the year the one day,
\nWhen I shall see my mother dear
\nAnd bring her cheer,
\nA-mothering on Sunday.<\/p>\n

So I’ll put on my Sunday coat,
\nAnd in my hat a feather,
\nAnd get the lines I writ by rote,
\nWith many a note,
\nThat I’ve a-strung together.<\/p>\n

And now to fetch my wheaten cake
\nTo fetch it from the baker,
\nHe promised me, for mother’s sake,
\nThe best he’d bake
\nFor me to fetch and take her.<\/p>\n

Well have I known, as I went by
\nOne hollow lane, that none day
\nI’d fail to find – for all they’re shy –
\nWhere violets lie,
\nAs I went home on Sunday.<\/p>\n

My sister Jane is waiting-maid
\nAlong with Squire’s lady;
\nAnd year by year her part she’s played
\nAnd home she stayed
\nTo get the dinner ready.<\/p>\n

For mother\u2019ll come to Church you’ll see-
\nOf all the year it’s the day-
\n‘The one,’ she’ll say, ‘that’s made for me’
\nAnd so it be:
\nIt’s every Mother’s free day.<\/p>\n

The boys will all come home from town
\nNot one will miss that one day;
\nAnd every maid will bustle down
\nTo show her gown,
\nA-mothering on Sunday.<\/p>\n
