The husband is the head of the home and of his wife. When a priest gives \u201cspiritual direction\u201d to a married woman, he is usurping the husband\u2019s place and creating sexual tension. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 140%; margin: 0in 0in 0pt 4.8pt; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto;\"><span style=\"line-height: 140%; color: #333333; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">No man, priest or not, has any business giving spiritual counsel to any woman who is not his wife. And no woman has any business giving spiritual counsel to a man.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 140%; margin: 0in 0in 0pt 4.8pt; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto;\"><span style=\"line-height: 140%; color: #333333; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">I have been researching anticlericalism. It is much milder in Protestant countries than in Catholic countries, where it sometimes becomes murderous.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 140%; margin: 0in 0in 0pt 4.8pt; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 140%; margin: 0in 0in 0pt 4.8pt; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto;\"><span style=\"line-height: 140%; color: #333333; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">A recurring theme in Catholic anticlericalism is the resentment and jealousy that the husband feels when his wife starts talking intimately to another man, whether in confession or spiritual direction. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 140%; margin: 0in 0in 0pt 4.8pt; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 140%; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"line-height: 140%; color: #333333; font-size: 14pt;\">Jules Michelet, the French historian, was horrified by this intrusion into the relationship of husband and wife.<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 140%; font-size: 14pt;\"> <\/span><span style=\"line-height: 140%; color: #333333; font-size: 14pt;\">He objected to confession because priests asked detailed questions about sexual practices. <\/span><span style=\"line-height: 140%; font-size: 14pt;\">One historian has observed that French disliked priests \u201cbecause through the confessional, where the penitents were mostly women, they exercised power over men&#8217;s sexuality.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 140%; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 140%; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"line-height: 140%; color: #333333; font-size: 14pt;\">A really sore point in France for Catholic men was contraception.<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 140%; font-size: 14pt;\"> If the married couple practiced <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">coitus interruptus<\/em>, the wife was blameless; the sin was solely the husband\u2019s. The French bishops in 1870 at the First Vatican Council were going to ask the Council to allow priests to give absolution to a man if\u00a0he was practicing <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">coitus interruptus<\/em>, but the Council adjourned because of<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>the political situation before the matter could be discussed.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<div id=\"themify_builder_content-420\" data-postid=\"420\" class=\"themify_builder_content themify_builder_content-420 themify_builder themify_builder_front\">\r\n\t<\/div>\r\n<!-- \/themify_builder_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 Crowhill makes the point: There is a perspective on the problem of (heterosexual) abuse that I think Catholics avoid \u2014 for obvious reasons.
