I am working on an article \u201cShall We Dance?\u201d about the 2000-year attack on dancing.<\/p>\n

One skirmish was fought at the beginning of the last century.<\/p>\n

Animal dances became popular at the beginning of the twentieth century. This was the basis of the Jeeves and Wooster<\/em> episode \u201cThe Bally Balliness of It All\u201d in which newt-fancier Gussie Fink-Nottle\u00a0 laments his lack of luck in love and wishes that humans could have mating dances like the newt, which dance he imitates, inspiring Oofy Prosser to begin a new dance fad at the Drone\u2019s Club.<\/p>\n

Karel Capec\u2019s The War with the Newts <\/em>describes the full-moon dance of the newly-intelligent newts, although he explains \u201cThis does not refer to the Salamander Dance which came into fashion around this time, especially in high society, and which Bishop Hiram declared to be the most depraved dance he had ever heard described.\u201d<\/p>\n

And in real history the evangelist with the wonderful name of Mordecai Ham denounced<\/p>\n

\u201cthe waltz\u2026 the turkey trot, grizzly bear, bunny hug, honey bug, gaby glide, pollywog wiggle,\u00a0 hippohop,\u00a0 ostrich stretch, kangaroo canter, dizzy drag,\u00a0 hooche kooche,\u00a0 Salom\u00e9 dance,\u00a0 necktie waltz,\u00a0 Bacchanalian waltz,\u00a0 hesitation waltz, love dance,\u00a0 shadow dance,\u00a0wiggle-de-wiggle,\u00a0 pickaninny dandle, fuzzy-wuzzy,\u00a0 terrapin toddie,\u00a0 Texas Tommy,\u00a0 Boston Dip,\u00a0 kitchen sink,\u00a0 cartel waltz,\u00a0 boll weevil wiggle,\u00a0 Arizona anguish,\u00a0 Argentines ardor,\u00a0 lame duck, chicken flip, grizzly glide, maxixe, shiver shake, cabbage clutch,\u00a0 puppy snuggle,\u00a0 fado foxtrot,\u00a0 syncopated canter,\u00a0 lemon squeeze,\u00a0 hug-me-tight, tango etc.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The Reverend Ham cemented his case by appealing to the words of Catholic priests:<\/p>\n

Father Brothers of New Jersey declared that \u201cindulgence in the turkey trot, the tango, and other objectionable modern dances is as much a violation of the seventh commandment as adultery.\u201d<\/p>\n

Father Hannigan said that if he were a judge, he \u201cwould\u00a0 sentence any woman who danced the turkey trot to a year in jail.”<\/p>\n

My favorite is the Grizzly Bear<\/a>. I shall dance it at the next cotillion to which I am invited.<\/p>\n
