The former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2018\/mar\/14\/williams-churchs-old-views-on-gay-clergy-led-to-desire-not-to-judge-sexual-activities\">Archbishop of Canterbury<\/a> has the same suspicion about the reaction of the Church of England to the loosening of sexual standards:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The Church of England may have \u201covercompensated\u201d for earlier repressive attitudes to gay clergy with a reluctance to deal rigorously with priests who sexually abused children, Rowan Williams, the former archbishop of Canterbury, has said.<\/p>\n<p>Giving evidence to the independent inquiry into child sexual abuse, Williams said an \u201cawkwardness\u201d about the church\u2019s views on homosexuality 30 or 40 years ago may have led to a desire not to be \u201cjudgmental about people\u2019s sexual activities\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In recent years, \u201cmore and more people [are] coming out of the closet. The question of clergy sexuality has been more openly discussed. The change in climate has been quite striking \u2026 I think there has been a sea change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He went on: \u201cAt a time when people were beginning to feel awkward about traditional closeted attitudes, there was perhaps an overcompensation, [people] saying, \u2018Well, we don\u2019t want to be to be judgmental about people\u2019s sexual activities \u2026 We must therefore give people a second chance and understand the pressures,\u2019 and so on.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2018\/03\/14\/church-overlooked-sexual-abuse-bishop-gay-former-archbishop\/\">another report<\/a> Rowan elaborates:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The Church of England may have overlooked abuse by paedophile bishop Peter Ball because he was gay, a former Archbishop of Canterbury has suggested.<\/p>\n<p>Baron Rowan Williams told the independent inquiry into child sexual abuse that &#8220;overcompensation&#8221; by colleagues who felt &#8220;awkward about the traditional closeted attitude&#8221; of the Church of England might have allowed Ball &#8220;second chances&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Asked by Fiona Scolding QC, lead counsel to the Anglican investigation, whether attitudes towards homosexuality affected the way Ball was treated, he said that church figures didn&#8217;t want to be &#8220;seen to be judgmental about people&#8217;s sexual activities&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Baron Rowan Williams told the independent inquiry into child sexual abuse that &#8220;overcompensation&#8221; by colleagues who felt &#8220;awkward about the traditional closeted attitude&#8221; of the Church of England\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2017\/06\/22\/senior-church-figures-colluded-disgraced-bishop-peter-ball-cover\/\">might have allowed Ball &#8220;second chances&#8221;.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-mediaconductor-processed=\"true\">Asked by Fiona Scolding QC, lead counsel to the Anglican investigation, whether attitudes towards homosexuality affected the way Ball was treated, he said that <strong>church figures didn&#8217;t want to be &#8220;seen to be judgmental about people&#8217;s sexual activities&#8221;<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>And, in case anyone has not noticed, Pope Francis, despite his rhetoric, has been much more tolerant of sexual abusers and their enablers than Pope Benedict was.<\/p>\n<p>After all, Francis&#8217; most quoted quip is &#8220;Who am I to judge?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>PS.
