{"id":73,"date":"2008-03-22T14:17:35","date_gmt":"2008-03-22T20:17:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.podles.org\/dialogue\/just-in-time-for-easter-73.htm"},"modified":"2008-03-22T14:17:35","modified_gmt":"2008-03-22T20:17:35","slug":"just-in-time-for-easter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.podles.org\/dialogue\/just-in-time-for-easter-73.htm","title":{"rendered":"Just in Time for Easter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Calibri\">Dietrich Bonheoffer denounced liberal Proetstantism because it preached cheap grace: \u201cCheap grace is preaching forgiveness without requiring repentance, baptism without church discipline, Communion without confession. \u2026 Cheap grace is grace without discipleship, grace without the cross, grace without Jesus Christ, living and incarnate.\u201d<\/font><\/p>\n<p><o:p><font face=\"Calibri\">\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p><font face=\"Calibri\">A leading minister of the United Church in Canda has decided the the next step is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/servlet\/story\/RTGAM.20080322.wchurch22\/BNStory\/National\/home\">\u201c<span lang=\"EN-CA\">Taking Christ out of Christianity.\u201d<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/a><\/font><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><o:p><font face=\"Calibri\">\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p><\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><o:p><\/o:p><\/span>\u00a0<span lang=\"EN-CA\"><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><font face=\"Calibri\">Seriously.<o:p><\/o:p><\/font><\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><o:p><font face=\"Calibri\">\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p><\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><font face=\"Calibri\">The Rev Gretta Vosper, of the West Hill United Church in Toronto, has decided to excise Jesus from the Easter liturgy:<o:p><\/o:p><\/font><\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><o:p><font face=\"Calibri\">\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"margin-right: 0px\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">But at West Hill on the faith&#8217;s holiest day, it will be done with a huge difference. The words \u201cJesus Christ\u201d will be excised from what the congregation sings and replaced with \u201cGlorious hope.\u201d<o:p><\/o:p><\/font><\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">Thus, it will be hope that is declared to be resurrected \u2013 an expression of renewal of optimism and the human spirit \u2013 but not Jesus, contrary to Christianity&#8217;s central tenet about the return to life on Easter morning of the crucified divine son of God.<o:p><\/o:p><\/font><\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">Generally speaking, no divine <em _counted=\"undefined\">anybody<\/em> makes an appearance in West Hill&#8217;s Sunday service liturgy.<o:p><\/o:p><\/font><\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><o:p><font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u00a0<\/font><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">The Rev. Vosper wants to Schliermacherize Christianity completely:<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"margin-right: 0px\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">She wants salvation redefined to mean new life through removing the causes of suffering in the world. She wants the church to define resurrection as \u201cstarting over,\u201d \u201cnew chances.\u201d She wants an end to the image of God as an intervening all-powerful authority who must be appeased to avoid divine wrath; rather she would have congregations work together as communities to define God \u2013 or god \u2013 according to their own worked-out definitions of what is holy and sacred. She wants the eucharist \u2013 the symbolic eating and drinking of Jesus&#8217;s body and blood to make the congregation part of Jesus&#8217;s body \u2013 to be instead a symbolic experience of community love.<o:p><\/o:p><\/font><\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">Theologians asked to comment on her book said they wouldn&#8217;t until they&#8217;ve read it. <o:p><\/o:p><\/font><\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">But one of her colleagues who knows her well, Rev. Rob Oliphant, the progressive pastor of Toronto&#8217;s Eglinton St. George&#8217;s United Church, said, \u201cWhile I&#8217;m somewhat sympathetic to the aims of it all \u2013 getting rid of the nonsense and keeping the core faith \u2013 I think that there is something lacking in it all. Gone is metaphor, poetry, symbol, image, beauty, paradox.\u201d<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><o:p><\/o:p><\/font><\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">For some reason she thinks that the world will flock to this Christianity without Christ.<span>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Vosper seems to unaware of her literary antecedents in Flannery O\u2019Connor\u2019s Wise Blood and the church of truth without Jesus Christ crucified.
