#218 Come Holy Ghost, Creator Blest<\/a> <\/strong><\/em>(MENDON) is a translation by Edward Caswall (1814-1878) of Hrabanus Maurus’s (756-856) Veni Creator Spiritus<\/em>. Caswall was an Anglican clergyman who became a Catholic and joined Newman at the Oratory.<\/p>\n

#376 Come down , O Love divine<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<\/a>(DOWN AMPNEY) was written by Bianco of Siena (c. 1345-c. 1412). The incipit (first line) invokes the Holy Spirit to \u201cseek thou this soul of mine and visit it with thine own ardor glowing.\u201d Classic images of Pentecost appear throughout the hymn, especially those that relate to fire. Stanza one mentions \u201cardor glowing\u201d and \u201ckindle . . . thy holy flame.\u201d Stanza two continues the flame images with \u201cfreely burn,\u201d \u201cdust and ashes in its heat consuming.\u201d The final stanza is a powerful statement of total commitment to love, to \u201ccreate a place\/wherein the Holy Spirit makes a dwelling.\u201d<\/p>\n

#273 Holy God we praise Thy name<\/a> <\/em>(TE DEUM) is a translation by the Rev. Clarence Alphonsus Walworth (1820-1900), one of the founders of the Paulists, of the German translation of the Te Deum<\/em>, made by the Rev.\u00a0 Ignaz Franz (1719-1790), a German priest. The Latin Te Deum<\/em> is a 4th c. hymn of uncertain authorship. We are singing all verses of the hymn because a plenary indulgence is granted to those who on this day visit an Ordinariate church and recite the Te Deum.<\/p>\n

Holy God, we praise Thy name;<\/em>
\nLord of all, we bow before Thee!<\/em>
\nAll on earth Thy scepter claim,<\/em>
\nAll in heav’n above adore Thee.<\/em>
