Many people have heard of it, but few have read it. I think I looked at it years ago, but did not read it through.<\/p>\n<p>I turned to the index to look for a promising chapter and discovered, to my surprise, that chapter 10 was on universal salvation, specifically the apokatastasis (the return of all things to God) and the anacephalosis\u00a0 (the recapitulation of all things in Christ).<\/p>\n<p>Unamuno writes \u201cWhen our Catholic theologians seek to justify rationally \u2013 or in other words, ethically \u2013 the dogma of the eternity of the pains of hell, they put forward reasons so specious, ridiculous, and childish, that it would appear impossible that they should ever have obtained currency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If <strong>all<\/strong> things are recapitulated in Christ, in His mystical body, and in Him <strong>all<\/strong> things return to God, does this not mean that \u201call things shall acquire consciousness and that in his consciousness everything that has happened will come to life again, and that everything that has existed in time will be eternalized?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHeaven, so many think, is society. Just as no one can live in isolation, so no one can survive in isolation. No one can enjoy God in heaven who sees his brother suffering in hell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the beginning of Mass according to the Book of Divine Worship, the priest addresses the congregation:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.podles.org\/dialogue\/wp-content\/uploads\/Summary-of-Law.png\" rel=\"prettyPhoto[8658]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8659\" src=\"http:\/\/www.podles.org\/dialogue\/wp-content\/uploads\/Summary-of-Law.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"453\" height=\"101\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.podles.org\/dialogue\/wp-content\/uploads\/Summary-of-Law.png 453w, http:\/\/www.podles.org\/dialogue\/wp-content\/uploads\/Summary-of-Law-300x67.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 453px) 100vw, 453px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Law and the Prophets: all of revelation is contained in these commandments. They are the heart of the Torah and of the New Law because they express the heart of God.<\/p>\n<p>I do not see any conditions or limitation in these commandments: \u201cyou shall love your neighbor unless he goes to hell forever, in which case you can forget about him or take pleasure in his eternal torture.\u201d The commandment to love neighbor has no limit, and more than teh commandment to love God has.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"themify_builder_content-8658\" data-postid=\"8658\" class=\"themify_builder_content themify_builder_content-8658 themify_builder themify_builder_front\">\r\n\t<\/div>\r\n<!-- \/themify_builder_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; While looking for something to read in my library, I cam across Miguel de Unamuno\u2019s The Tragic Sense of Life.
