{"id":105,"date":"2008-06-30T10:01:37","date_gmt":"2008-06-30T16:01:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.podles.org\/dialogue\/?p=105"},"modified":"2008-07-04T09:16:37","modified_gmt":"2008-07-04T15:16:37","slug":"cesar-chavez-as-henry-viii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.podles.org\/dialogue\/cesar-chavez-as-henry-viii-105.htm","title":{"rendered":"Hugo Chavez as Henry VIII"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">I doubt that this will go anywhere, but it should provide some entertainment for a while.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.miamiherald.com\/news\/miami_dade\/story\/587067.html\">Miami Herald <\/a>reports:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"background: white;\"><span style=\"mso-ansi-language: EN;\" lang=\"EN\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">A church modeled in part after one in Miami but with a &#8221;revolutionary&#8221; spirit that praises Venezuelan President Hugo Ch\u00e1vez is now at the center of a religious and social controversy in Venezuela.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"background: white;\"><span style=\"mso-ansi-language: EN;\" lang=\"EN\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Although it has adopted many of the symbols and rites of Roman Catholicism, the new Reform Catholic Venezuelan Church departs from traditional belief in some key ways.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"background: white;\"><span style=\"mso-ansi-language: EN;\" lang=\"EN\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">For example, reformists consider that &#8221;homosexuality and bisexuality are not sins in and of themselves.&#8221; Divorce is allowed and priests do not take vows of chastity.<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">The new church uses the language of liberation theology:<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"mso-ansi-language: EN;\" lang=\"EN\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">According to its leaders, the reformist church seeks to establish an institution that is &#8220;inclusive, participatory and with a strong Bolivarian spirit that recognizes Jesus Christ as the Lord of History. He is present in the revolutionary process that is occurring in Venezuela.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">This is not the first time politicians in Venezuela have tried this trick:<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"mso-ansi-language: EN;\" lang=\"EN\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">Attempts to establish churches with political motivations are nothing new to Venezuela.
