{"id":25,"date":"2008-01-12T18:45:17","date_gmt":"2008-01-13T00:45:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.podles.org\/dialogue\/crimes-too-terrible-to-be-believed-25.htm"},"modified":"2008-01-12T18:45:17","modified_gmt":"2008-01-13T00:45:17","slug":"crimes-too-terrible-to-be-believed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.podles.org\/dialogue\/crimes-too-terrible-to-be-believed-25.htm","title":{"rendered":"Crimes Too Terrible to be Believed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 President Bush wondered and why the Allies did not bomb the Nazi extermination camps. <em>Der Spiegel<\/em> discusses this in an article <a href=\"http:\/\/einestages.spiegel.de\/static\/topicalbumbackground\/1198\/1\/warum_die_alliierten_auschwitz_nicht_bombardierten.html\">Why the Allies Did Not Bomb Auschwitz.<\/a><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 0.5in\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">The allies of course knew the Nazis were anti-Semitic, but first heard of the plans for the Holocaust in August 1942, In November 1942 a Polish officer, Jan Karski, was smuggled out of <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\">Poland<\/st1:country-region> to <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">England<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>, and reported the extermination camps to the Americans.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 0.5in\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">But the dreadful news that he brought surpassed the possibilities of imagination of those who heard him. \u201cDo you think that I am lying,\u201d Karski was supposed to have asked the incredulous Supreme Court Justice Felix Frankfurter,. \u201cI didn\u2019t say that you are lying,\u201d Frankfurters answer was supposed to have been. \u201cI said, I can\u2019t believe you.\u201d<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 0.5in\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">Under Louis XIV the <st1:city w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Paris<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>chief of police Gabriel Nicholas de la Reynie, who was a modern, rational type, received reports from the priests of Notre Dame that many people were confessing to poisoning their spouses.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 0.5in\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">La Reyne, at first very skeptical, looked into this, and to his horror discovered an underground in <st1:city w:st=\"on\">Paris<\/st1:city> and at <st1:city w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Versailles<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>of diabolist priests, black masses, poisoners, and child murderers. Someone may have been trying to poison the king. The investigation got closer and closer to the royal family, until Louis, fearing that <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">France<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>would be completely disgraced, terminated the investigation and burned the reports with his own hands. La Reynie had kept copies for self-protection, so we know about the affair of the poisons.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 La Reynie realized that for the criminals the very <span lang=\"EN\">&#8220;the enormity of their crimes proved their safeguard.&#8221; No one wanted to believe that a civilized Christian society could have such crimes.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/font><span lang=\"EN\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">Most Holocaust skeptics are anti-Semites, but some, like Judge Brack at the end of Hedda Gabler, think \u201cGood God!&#8211;people don&#8217;t do such things.\u201d<o:p><\/o:p><\/font><\/span><span lang=\"EN\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">Some people have reacted to my book Sacrilege in that way, although I have left out some of the more bizarre stories of diabolism. People find themselves unable to believe that priests and maybe bishops perpetrated diabolic rites of sexual abuse- but what a brilliant safeguard for the criminals.
