{"id":278,"date":"2010-02-16T12:19:56","date_gmt":"2010-02-16T18:19:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.podles.org\/dialogue\/?p=278"},"modified":"2010-02-16T12:19:56","modified_gmt":"2010-02-16T18:19:56","slug":"ireland-and-the-pope","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.podles.org\/dialogue\/ireland-and-the-pope-278.htm","title":{"rendered":"Ireland and the Pope"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpFirst\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Pope Benedict and the Irish bishops have issued a <a href=\"http:\/\/cnsblog.wordpress.com\/2010\/02\/16\/vatican-statement-on-popes-meeting-with-irish-bishops\/\">communiqu\u00e9<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"border-right: medium none; padding-right: 0in; border-top: medium none; padding-left: 0in; padding-bottom: 1pt; border-left: medium none; padding-top: 0in; border-bottom: windowtext 1pt solid; mso-element: para-border-div; mso-border-bottom-alt: solid windowtext .75pt;\">\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\" style=\"mso-padding-alt: 0in 0in 1.0pt 0in; mso-border-bottom-alt: solid windowtext .75pt; padding: 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-ansi-language: EN;\" lang=\"EN\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">For his part, the Holy Father observed that the sexual abuse of children and young people is not only a heinous crime, but also a grave sin which offends God and wounds the dignity of the human person created in his image.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-ansi-language: EN;\" lang=\"EN\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-ansi-language: EN;\" lang=\"EN\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; mso-ansi-language: EN;\" lang=\"EN\">The Holy Father also pointed to the more general crisis of faith affecting the Church and he linked that to the lack of respect for the human person and how the weakening of faith has been a significant contributing factor in the phenomenon of the sexual abuse of minors.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Good words, but only words.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Although Benedict has acted more strongly against priest-abusers than any pope since Pius V, he has not really acted against bishops who have abused or against bishops who have tolerated abuse.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Bishops who have committed sexual abuse remain bishops: they could be laicized, like Bishop Fernando Lugo of Paraguay was when he was elected president But these criminal bishops remain bishops \u201cin good standing\u201d in the Church.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Cardinal Law was given a luxurious post in Rome and sits on my important committees. A few Irish bishops have been forced to resign because of public outrage, but of all the bishops who have tolerated sexual abuse, only a handful have suffered any consequences beyond having to issue apologies written by their lawyers.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Having read hundreds of cases, I wonder whether many of the abusers are atheists, in fact whether some of the bishops are atheists.
