In part this was a reaction to integrisme, the strain of Catholic thought that insisted that the state must be Catholic and that clerics should direct the affairs of state, directly or indirectly.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt; font-family: Georgia\"><o:p>\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt; font-family: Georgia\">The Catholic, anti-Semitic right disgraced itself both in the Dreyfus affair and, to some extent, under the <st1:city w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Vichy<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> regime. La la\u00efcit\u00e9 was seen as a wayof guarding human rights.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt; font-family: Georgia\"><o:p>\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt; font-family: Georgia\">President Sarkozy of <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">France<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>, however, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/web\/article\/0,1-0@2-823448,36-1000456@51-1000402,0.html\">Le Monde<\/a>, is revising the concept of <span>\u00a0<\/span>la la\u00efcit\u00e9. <span>\u00a0<\/span>In <st1:city w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Rome<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> he said<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt; font-family: Georgia\"><o:p>\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt; font-family: Georgia\">\u201c<st1:country-region w:st=\"on\">France<\/st1:country-region> has need of Catholics,\u201d he affirmed, after having insisted on \u201cthe essentially Christian roots of <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\">France<\/st1:country-region>\u201d and criticized a laicity that had tried \u201cto cut off <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">France<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> from its Christian roots.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt; font-family: Georgia\"><o:p>\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt; font-family: Georgia\"><o:p>\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt; font-family: Georgia\">When he was in <st1:place w:st=\"on\"><st1:country-region w:st=\"on\">Saudi Arabia<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place>, Sarkozy also spoke of\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt; font-family: Georgia\"><o:p>\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt; font-family: Georgia\">the equal importance that he accorded to the believers of different religions, to freemasons, and to atheists.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt; font-family: Georgia\"><o:p>\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt; font-family: Georgia\">Freemasons and others are not happy with Sarkozy. The grand master of the Freemasons in <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">France<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> said:<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt; font-family: Georgia\"><o:p>\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt; font-family: Georgia\">M. Sarkozy puts at the heart of society a religious dimension which we do not share.
