O\u2019Brien, Archbishop of Baltimore, issued the following statement in response to Father Raniero Cantalamessa\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/s\/ap\/20100402\/ap_on_re_eu\/eu_church_abuse\"><span style=\"color: #5588aa; text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;\">Good Friday comments<\/span><\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/zenit.org\/article-28840?l=english\"><span style=\"color: #5588aa; text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;\">fulltext<\/span><\/a>) at St. Peter\u2019s Basilica in Rome:Father Cantalamessa\u2019s words on Good Friday, somehow linking the Catholic Church&#8217;s sexual abuse scandal with anti-Semitism, were unfortunate and reprehensible. They pose harm to Catholic-Jewish relations in Baltimore and around the world and I personally denounce them.Rightly upset and embarrassed as we are by the scandal we are enduring as Catholics, as frustrated as we are by the sometimes unfair coverage in certain elements of the press, nothing justifies this insensitive, harmful and regrettable comparison.<font style=\"font-size: 14pt;\" color=\"#333333\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #333333;\">On behalf of the Catholic Church in Baltimore, I offer apologies to our friends in the Jewish community, to victims of clergy sexual abuse, and to anyone offended by Father Cantalamessa\u2019s personal views.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/font><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #333333;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #333333;\">I wonder whether anyone has pointed out to O\u2019Brien that his Holy Thursday paralleling of the pain of sex abuse victims and his pain at seeing press criticisms of the hierarchy was about as offensive as Cantalamessa\u2019s remarks.
