The melody of the Mothering Sunday song was taken from a song by Heinrich von Laufenberg, a fifteenth-century priest (c. 1390-1460).<\/p>\n

The Catholic Encyclopedia<\/em> says<\/p>\n

the chief significance of\u00a0Laufenberg is as a writer of\u00a0religious\u00a0lyrics. Some of these are renderings of\u00a0Latin\u00a0hymns<\/a>, while others are original poems expressive of his\u00a0love<\/a>\u00a0for\u00a0Jesus<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Our Lady<\/a>. Most noteworthy are <\/span>his\u00a0recasts\u00a0of worldly lyrics and folksongs in\u00a0religious\u00a0form\u00a0(so-called Contrafacta<\/em>). In these he adhered as closely as possible to the\u00a0form\u00a0and diction of the folk song, retaining the popular melodies but infusing into them a\u00a0religious\u00a0spirit,<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
