A teacher in the secondary school Institute Men\u00e9nez Tola has been denounced by the family of a Moslem student for talking about ham <\/a>in class.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Un profesor de secundaria del Instituto Men\u00e9nez Tolosa\u2026ha sido denunciado por la familia de un alumno musulm\u00e1n por hablar de jam\u00f3n <\/span><\/span><\/span>en clase. En concreto, el docente impart\u00eda clase de Geograf\u00eda cuando, al hacer referencia a los distintos climas de Espa\u00f1a, coment\u00f3 que el fr\u00edo propio de Tr\u00e9velez, en Granada, favorec\u00eda la curaci\u00f3n del jam\u00f3n. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Fuen ese momento cuando un alumno de origen musulm\u00e1n consider\u00f3 que el ejemplo era una ofensa para su credo. Tras la denuncia interpuesta por la familia del menor, la Polic\u00eda se person\u00f3 en el Instituto para interrogar al profesor<\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The teacher was lecturing about climate and mentioned that the climate of a Spanish city favored the curing of hams.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A snotty Moslem kid (13 years old – what else) took offense at the word \u201cham,\u201d raised his hand, told the\u00a0teacher that\u00a0he was not to use that word<\/strong> in class, the teacher\u00a0told the snotty kid off, the kid then told his parents, the parents went to the police, \u00a0<\/span>the police went to the school and interrogated the teacher.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Jos\u00e9 Reyes Fern\u00e1ndez, the teacher, was livid<\/a>. He said the denunciation to the police was \u201cridiculous, intolerable, and grotesque,\u201d and that the mother had resorted to \u201cdefamation, lies, and calumny.\u201d She had attacked “his honor, his image, and his professional ethics.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The local school officials supported the teacher<\/a>, who still has a police complaint on his record.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Two points — \u00a0<\/span>one minor, one major \u2013 you decide which\u00a0 <\/span>is which.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Spanish may have abandoned Catholicism, but they are still devoted to ham. There are ham shops throughout Spain, I walked past a Museum of Ham in one city, and my wife tried the ham ice cream in Madrid.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The snotty Moslem kid may have known his complaint wouldn\u2019t get far, but he put teachers on notice that they had better not say anything offensive to Moslems. How do teachers talk about Spanish history, the Reconquest, or terrorism? <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
