Most modern English church music is on the shrieky side, but John Rutter has taken perhaps the loveliest Christmas poem in the English language and set it to music that can heal the heart. Here is the King\u2019s College choir.<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

What sweeter music can we bring
\nThan a carol, for to sing
\nThe birth of this our heavenly King?
\nAwake the voice! Awake the string!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Dark and dull night, fly hence away,
\nAnd give the honor to this day,
\nThat sees December turned to May.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Why does the chilling winter\u2019s morn
\nSmile, like a field beset with corn?
\nOr smell like a meadow newly-shorn,
\nThus, on the sudden? Come and see
\nThe cause, why things thus fragrant be:
\n\u2018Tis He is born, whose quickening birth
\nGives life and luster, public mirth,
\nTo heaven, and the under-earth.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

We see him come, and know him ours,
\nWho, with his sunshine and his showers,
\nTurns all the patient ground to flowers.
\nThe darling of the world is come,
\nAnd fit it is, we find a room
\nTo welcome him. The nobler part
\nOf all the house here, is the heart.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Which we will give him; and bequeath
\nThis holly, and this ivy wreath,
\nTo do him honour, who\u2019s our King,
\nAnd Lord of all this revelling.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
