The Church of England had preserved the Lenten fast; the Puritans, although they fasted, rejected the idea of a prescribed time for fasting. The Anglican Church to a large extent preserved the rhythms of the church year, the feasts and fasts, because \u201cFor everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven\u2026 a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Welcome dear feast of Lent: who loves not thee,<br \/>\nHe loves not Temperance, or Authority,<br \/>\nBut is compos&#8217;d of passion.<br \/>\nThe Scriptures bid us fast; the Church says, now:<br \/>\nGive to thy Mother, what thou wouldst allow<br \/>\nTo ev&#8217;ry Corporation.<\/p>\n<p>The humble soul compos&#8217;d of love and fear<br \/>\nBegins at home, and lays the burden there,<br \/>\nWhen doctrines disagree,<br \/>\nHe says, in things which use hath justly got,<br \/>\nI am a scandal to the Church, and not<br \/>\nThe Church is so to me.<\/p>\n<p>True Christians should be glad of an occasion<br \/>\nTo use their temperance, seeking no evasion,<br \/>\nWhen good is seasonable;<br \/>\nUnless Authority, which should increase<br \/>\nThe obligation in us, make it less,<br \/>\nAnd Power itself disable.<\/p>\n<p>Besides the cleanness of sweet abstinence,<br \/>\nQuick thoughts and motions at a small expense,<br \/>\nA face not fearing light:<br \/>\nWhereas in fulness there are sluttish fumes,<br \/>\nSour exhalations, and dishonest rheums,<br \/>\nRevenging the delight.<\/p>\n<p>Then those same pendant profits, which the spring<br \/>\nAnd Easter intimate, enlarge the thing,<br \/>\nAnd goodness of the deed.<br \/>\nNeither ought other men&#8217;s abuse of Lent<br \/>\nSpoil the good use; lest by that argument<br \/>\nWe forfeit all our Creed.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s true, we cannot reach Christ&#8217;s forti&#8217;eth day;<br \/>\nYet to go part of that religious way,<br \/>\nIs better than to rest:<br \/>\nWe cannot reach our Saviour&#8217;s purity;<br \/>\nYet we are bid, &#8216;Be holy ev&#8217;n as he, &#8216;<br \/>\nIn both let&#8217;s do our best.<\/p>\n<p>Who goeth in the way which Christ hath gone,<br \/>\nIs much more sure to meet with him, than one<br \/>\nThat travelleth by-ways:<br \/>\nPerhaps my God, though he be far before,<br \/>\nMay turn and take me by the hand, and more:<br \/>\nMay strengthen my decays.<\/p>\n<p>Yet Lord instruct us to improve our fast<br \/>\nBy starving sin and taking such repast,<br \/>\nAs may our faults control:<br \/>\nThat ev&#8217;ry man may revel at his door,<br \/>\nNot in his parlour; banqueting the poor,<br \/>\nAnd among those his soul.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I think the stanza which we might best take to heart is this one:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It&#8217;s true, we cannot reach Christ&#8217;s forti&#8217;eth day;<br \/>\nYet to go part of that religious way,<br \/>\nIs better than to rest:<br \/>\nWe cannot reach our Saviour&#8217;s purity;<br \/>\nYet we are bid, &#8216;Be holy ev&#8217;n as he, &#8216;<br \/>\nIn both let&#8217;s do our best.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>We cannot fast from food for forty days, or attain the holiness of Jesus, but \u201cin both let\u2019s do our best.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"themify_builder_content-4688\" data-postid=\"4688\" class=\"themify_builder_content themify_builder_content-4688 themify_builder themify_builder_front\">\r\n\t<\/div>\r\n<!-- \/themify_builder_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; The Anglican Parson George Herbert (1593-1633) in his poem \u201cLent\u201d counsels us to follow the Church\u2019s directions for Lent.
