{"id":500,"date":"2011-10-20T17:28:30","date_gmt":"2011-10-20T23:28:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.podles.org\/dialogue\/?p=500"},"modified":"2011-10-20T17:42:28","modified_gmt":"2011-10-20T23:42:28","slug":"cultural-literacy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.podles.org\/dialogue\/cultural-literacy-500.htm","title":{"rendered":"Cultural Literacy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpFirst\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\"><span>Those of us of a certain age share pop cultural refereces that are lost on the younger\u00a0generation, whose references I find mystifying.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\"><span>When I was hiking a fellow hiker of my age and I were resting, When he decided it was time to go, he turned to me and said <em>Let\u2019s went!<\/em> To which I replied <em>Pancho!<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\"><span>The students occupying the Plaza del Sol in Madrid call themselves <em>los indignados<\/em>. To those of my generation, this brought back memories of Al Capp&#8217;s S.W.I.N.E.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.wfmu.org\/.a\/6a00d83451c29169e20133edb9857b970b-500wi\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"305\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\">Speaking of Al Capp, I often reference to an alcoholic concoction as Kickapoo Joy Juice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/images.arcadja.com\/capp_al-kickapoo_joyjuice~300~10557_20091201_NULL_130.jpg \" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"263\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\"><span> <\/span>After I grew up I discovered there were in fact Kickapoo Indians. I am not sure what they thought of the cartoon &#8211; although Al Capp was an equal opportunity caricaturist \u2013 most of the characters are 100% Wasps. The Indian in the cartoon is Lonesome Polecat, by which name I often address our resident cat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\"><span>Then there were Dogpatch\u2019s Civil War Hero \u2013 Jubilation T. Cornpone (Hero of &#8220;Cornpone&#8217;s Retreat,&#8221; &#8220;Cornpone&#8217;s Disaster&#8221; and &#8220;Cornpone&#8217;s Rout&#8221;) and the true-to-life U. S. Senator Jack S. Phogbound (His motto &#8211; \u201cThere\u2019s no Jack S. like our Jack S.!)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/deniskitchen.com\/docs\/bios\/bio.phogbound.jpg \" alt=\"\" width=\"140\" height=\"168\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\"><span> <\/span>And Earthquake McGoon, Moonbeam McSwine, Big Barnsmell (Inside Man at the Skonk Works), Fearless Fosdick, the schmoos, hammus alabamus, Evil-Eye Fleagle, Marryin\u2019 Sam,<span> <\/span>Joe BTFSPLK, and Sadie Hawkins Day \u2013 and let us not forget the great industrialist General Bullmoose (\u201cWhat\u2019s good for General Bullmoose is good for the USA!\u201d).
