She actually knew someone who knew the author of <em>St.\u00a0 Fidgeta and Other Parodies<\/em>. (I wonder if that counts as a third-class relic.) From this person my wife learned that the pieces in <em>St. Fidgeta<\/em> were the result of many profound conversations during Bellairs\u2019 college years. I had similar conversations at the Blue Jay bar on St. Paul St., but they are not publishable, at least if I want to keep my reputation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.podles.org\/dialogue\/wp-content\/uploads\/Question_Box_Moderator.png\" rel=\"prettyPhoto[6728]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6733 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.podles.org\/dialogue\/wp-content\/uploads\/Question_Box_Moderator.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"183\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: ancient;\">Question Box Moderator<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In Bellairs\u2019 great 1966 book, he includes <span style=\"font-family: ancient;\">The Question Box<\/span>. It contains such questions as<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Q. Does the olive in the martini break the Lenten fast, or is it considered part of the drink?<\/p>\n<p>A. This probably has vexed some of the subtlest minds of the Church. Is the olive <em>qua <\/em>olive part of the martini <em>qua<\/em> martini? Etc.<\/p>\n<p>Q. What about the cookie that is sometimes served with a malted?<\/p>\n<p>A. Don\u2019t be ridiculous<\/p>\n<p>Q. Father Burgerbitz of St. Lintel\u2019s Abbey writes: The other day when I was teaching Redemptive Transmigration\u2026<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>You get the idea.<\/p>\n<p>The question in question is:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Q. If an Anglican priest converts to Catholicism, are all the confessions he heard before his conversion invalid?<\/p>\n<p>A. They are invalid even if he doesn\u2019t convert. The poor Anglican sinner that this \u201cpriest\u201d had absolved is, sadly enough, like man who thinks he has filled a book with enough Green Stamps<span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\"><sup>TM<\/sup><\/span> for an Eternal Reward. When, on the Last Day, he comes to the Redemption Center, God looks at the book and hands it back, saying with a frown, \u201cThese are not my stamps. Go somewhere else.&#8221; Still clutching his worthless scrip, the bilked penitent falls headlong down the crystal stairs, bumping his head all the way to the bottom.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The newspaper of the Roman Catholic archdiocese of San Francisco reprinted this question, and an alert Episcopalian reader sent the piece to <em>The Living Church<\/em>, where the editors, who were perhaps lacking in sensitivity to literary genres,\u00a0 took it as a serious attack on Anglicanism. Even the Green Stamps did not clue the editors in.<\/p>\n<p>Someone then informed them, \u201cAhem.
