{"id":7449,"date":"2019-02-22T10:47:10","date_gmt":"2019-02-22T16:47:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.podles.org\/dialogue\/?p=7449"},"modified":"2019-02-22T10:47:10","modified_gmt":"2019-02-22T16:47:10","slug":"the-wobbling-chair-of-st-peter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.podles.org\/dialogue\/the-wobbling-chair-of-st-peter-7449.htm","title":{"rendered":"The Wobbling Chair of St. Peter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.podles.org\/dialogue\/wp-content\/uploads\/wobbling-chair.jpg\" rel=\"prettyPhoto[7449]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-7450\" src=\"http:\/\/www.podles.org\/dialogue\/wp-content\/uploads\/wobbling-chair-300x134.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"134\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.podles.org\/dialogue\/wp-content\/uploads\/wobbling-chair-300x134.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.podles.org\/dialogue\/wp-content\/uploads\/wobbling-chair.jpg 337w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Today is the Feast of the Chair of St. Peter, and I have been reflecting upon the resemblance between the erratic behavior of the present occupant of that chair and the erratic behavior of the first occupant of that chair.<\/p>\n<p>Peter was impulsive and did not always think things through. \u201cDepart from me, for I am a sinful man\u201d; telling Jesus he should avoid being crucified and being called Satan in return; claiming he would die rather than deny Jesus and then denying him three times; jumping from his boat and swimming ashore when he sees the risen Jesus on the seashore.<\/p>\n<p>But Jesus called him Rock. I think it is clear that Jesus was not referring to Peter\u2019s steady and unshakeable character, but to the supernatural gift of faith that the Father gave Peter, enabling Peter to see that Jesus was the Messiah.<\/p>\n<p>So we do not have to trust in the natural character of the popes.\u00a0 We trust in the gift of faith that God gives to the popes so that they will never not proclaim Jesus as the Messiah \u2013 note the negative.\u00a0 God will never let a pope formally teach heresy and lead people astray, but God does not make the pope an oracle whose every chance remark is divinely inspired.<\/p>\n<div id=\"themify_builder_content-7449\" data-postid=\"7449\" class=\"themify_builder_content themify_builder_content-7449 themify_builder themify_builder_front\">\r\n\t<\/div>\r\n<!-- \/themify_builder_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today is the Feast of the Chair of St. Peter, and I have been reflecting upon the resemblance between the erratic behavior of the present occupant of that chair and the erratic behavior of the first occupant of that chair.
