{"id":78,"date":"2008-04-28T10:21:25","date_gmt":"2008-04-28T16:21:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.podles.org\/dialogue\/the-war-and-cartagena-78.htm"},"modified":"2008-04-28T10:21:25","modified_gmt":"2008-04-28T16:21:25","slug":"the-war-and-cartagena","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.podles.org\/dialogue\/the-war-and-cartagena-78.htm","title":{"rendered":"The War and Cartagena"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">We were in <st1:place w:st=\"on\"><st1:city w:st=\"on\">Cartagena<\/st1:city>, <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\">Spain<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place>, recently before we left for our cruise. <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; tab-stops: 293.85pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">In the town square at the waterfront is an unusual\u00a0war memorial: A Spanish memorial to the Spanish-American war, which Spain lost.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; tab-stops: 293.85pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/LeePodles\/SBUORbA4MgI\/AAAAAAAAAyQ\/UQyAYhDRu4o\/s400\/DSCN3833.JPG\" \/><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">The monument has a sailor holding a dying soldier.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"http:\/\/picasaweb.google.com\/LeePodles\/Cartagena08\/photo#5194073472073478674\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/LeePodles\/SBUOTbA4MhI\/AAAAAAAAAyc\/fOpOXKnIrCo\/s400\/DSCN3858.JPG\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">The victories are holding their laurel wreaths down.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">The monument lists the great battle at <st1:place w:st=\"on\"><st1:city w:st=\"on\">Santiago<\/st1:city>, <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\">Cuba<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place>, and the names of the young men from the area who fought and who died in battles against Americans. <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the war, two additional statues were added on the pier by the monument.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">One is of a soldier with his head resting on his hand. <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/picasaweb.google.com\/LeePodles\/Cartagena08\/photo#5194073527908053538\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/LeePodles\/SBUOWrA4MiI\/AAAAAAAAAyk\/FENAb9vllkA\/s400\/DSCN3834.JPG\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">One shows a sailor weary walking home with his duffle bag.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/LeePodles\/SBUOYrA4MjI\/AAAAAAAAAys\/GJsr4viHCQU\/s400\/DSCN3850.JPG\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">What else can way say about a distant, lost war.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">The Spanish-American war was one of the least justified wars in American history, and it had a human cost.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">Even far more justified wars have human costs. In the Kolpinghaus (similar to a Catholic YMCA) in Eichstaett in <st1:state w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Bavaria<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> is a simple marble plaque with the names of the young Catholic men from the town who died in World War II. At the end, not even the dates of their death were known: they simply never came home.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">Eichstaett was an intensely Catholic town and known for its opposition to Nazism. But the young Catholics of the town were drafted and died fighting for an evil cause. It is well for both the world and for the Germans that Nazism was defeated \u2013 but the young men of Eichstaett are dead, and almost forgotten.<\/font><\/p>\n<div id=\"themify_builder_content-78\" data-postid=\"78\" class=\"themify_builder_content themify_builder_content-78 themify_builder themify_builder_front\">\r\n\t<\/div>\r\n<!-- \/themify_builder_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We were in Cartagena, Spain, recently before we left for our cruise.
