They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Loquebantur variis linguis<\/em> is an example of a polyphonic responsory as established by Taverner: both Tallis and Sheppard contributed a number of pieces to the genre. The text is intense\u2014intensely personal and intensely passionate. The incipit (first line) invokes the Holy Spirit to \u201cseek thou this soul of mine and visit it with thine own ardor glowing.\u201d Classic images of Pentecost appear throughout the hymn, especially those that relate to fire. Stanza one mentions \u201cardor glowing\u201d and \u201ckindle . . . thy holy flame.\u201d Stanza two continues the flame images with \u201cfreely burn,\u201d \u201cdust and ashes in its heat consuming.\u201d The final stanza is a powerful statement of total commitment to love, to \u201ccreate a place\/wherein the Holy Spirit makes a dwelling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DOWN AMPNEY is a tune by Ralph Vaughan Williams, who named it after the village of his birth.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=HEDv3jXU704\">Come Holy Ghost, Creator Blest<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>(MENDON) is a translation by Edward Caswall (1814-1878) of Hrabanus Maurus\u2019s (756-856) V<em>eni Creator Spiritus<\/em>. Caswall was an Anglican clergyman who became a Catholic and joined Newman at the Oratory.
