Aug. 18.?The races of the Royal<br \/>\nAlbert Regatta at Sontlisea were Inter<br \/>\nrupted to-day by an accident which caused<br \/>\nthe death of Beron von Zetwitz, the<br \/>\nowner of the twenty-rater Isolde, and<br \/>\nendangered the lives of the captain and<br \/>\njrew of that vessel, all of whom were<br \/>\nknocked overboard.<br \/>\nThe large raters started at 10 o&#8217;clock<br \/>\nthis morning to go over the forty-six-mile<br \/>\ncourse sailed over yesterday, and the small<br \/>\nraters started at 11 o&#8217;clock to sail over<br \/>\nthe same course, but only once round?<br \/>\ntwenty-three miles. The starters in the<br \/>\nbig race were the Ailsa, Britannia, Meteor<br \/>\nand Satanita, and those in the small rater<br \/>\nraces were The Saint, Niagara, Samp<br \/>\nshire, Audrey, Ptenitent and Isolde.<br \/>\nThe big yachts had finished the first<br \/>\nround of the course and were just starting<br \/>\nupon the second round when suddenly the<br \/>\nboats of both classes seemed to have be<br \/>\ncome jammed together. The Isolde, which<br \/>\nwas sandwiched between two yachts of the<br \/>\nlarger class, received a severe blow from<br \/>\nthe Kaiser&#8217;s yachj: Meteor, causing her<br \/>\nmast to snap in two and fall overboard.<br \/>\nTlirown Into tlie Sen.<br \/>\nThe shock was a heavy one, causing the<br \/>\nIsolde to careen, and, as she did so, all ou<br \/>\nboard of her were spilled Into the sea.<br \/>\nWhen Meteor struck the small yacht<br \/>\nthere ns great crash, and blocks,, frag<br \/>\nments of the broken mast and other parts<br \/>\nof the Isolde were sent flying In every di<br \/>\nrection.<br \/>\nAs soon as the collision took place the<br \/>\nother yachts stopped and put out boats to<br \/>\nrescue the men struggling in the water.<br \/>\non von Zedtwitz, the owner of the<br \/>\nIso&#8217;iuv, who was on board of his yacht,<br \/>\nwas 8 -nek on the head by a. block, or u<br \/>\npiece of broken mast, and knocked over<br \/>\nboard. lie w \\taken out of the water as<br \/>\nsoon as possible and conveyed on board a<br \/>\nsteam yacht to the clubhouse at Hyde.<br \/>\nBnron von Zedtwitz was unconscious when<br \/>\npicked up. lie received every possible<br \/>\nmedical attention at Ryde, but he did not<br \/>\nregain consciousness and died soon after<br \/>\nreaching the clubhouse.<br \/>\nA strong wind was blowing at the time<br \/>\nof the accident, kicking up a bad sea, and<br \/>\nit was raining hard. The Isolde was badly<br \/>\ndamaged and was twoed to Portsmouth.<br \/>\nThe bowsprit of the Meteor swept her<br \/>\ndeck and carried away all of her gear.<br \/>\nSeveral members of the Isolde&#8217;s crew were<br \/>\n?picked up in an exhausted condition.<br \/>\nNarrow E?caj?cs of tl?&amp;lt;? Men.<br \/>\nThe crew had some very narrow escapes,<br \/>\nbut, fortunately, ail of them were rescued.<br \/>\nA sailor belonging to the British gunboat<br \/>\nAnt, which was lying at anchor near the<br \/>\nscene of the collision, rescued one of the<br \/>\nIsolde&#8217;s rnpa, who could not have survived<br \/>\nthirty seconds longer. The accident cast a<br \/>\ngloom over -everything, and the races were<br \/>\nabandoned for the day.<br \/>\nCaptain Gome*, the skipper of the Meteor,<br \/>\nascribes the collision of his vessel with the<br \/>\nIsolde to the fact (hat the Britannia did not<br \/>\nmake way for the Meteor to pass the Isolde.<br \/>\nAll of the clubhouses at Spithead and<br \/>\nI.tyde are flying flags at half mast in con<br \/>\nsequence of the death of the Baron. As a<br \/>\nyachtsman he was a ?ood sportsman and ho<br \/>\nwas well liked in all of the English sport<br \/>\ning centres. Ills wife, the Baroness von<br \/>\n7!odtwltz, w.is daughter of the late<br \/>\nCharles Roosevelt, of New York.<br \/>\nFestivities Postponed.<br \/>\nTo-morrow&#8217;s yacht races and the fire<br \/>\nworks, with which It was Intended to sig<br \/>\nnalize the ending of the Royil Albert Yacht<br \/>\nClub regatta at So&#8217;.thsea, have been post<br \/>\nponed until after the funeral.<br \/>\nToe Isolds wan a twwtr-rater yacht.<br \/>\nconstructed by the Hcrreshoffs at Bristol,<br \/>\nit.
