\nFestivities.
\nLondon. Aug. 18.?The races of the Royal
\nAlbert Regatta at Sontlisea were Inter
\nrupted to-day by an accident which caused
\nthe death of Beron von Zetwitz, the
\nowner of the twenty-rater Isolde, and
\nendangered the lives of the captain and
\njrew of that vessel, all of whom were
\nknocked overboard.
\nThe large raters started at 10 o’clock
\nthis morning to go over the forty-six-mile
\ncourse sailed over yesterday, and the small
\nraters started at 11 o’clock to sail over
\nthe same course, but only once round?
\ntwenty-three miles. The starters in the
\nbig race were the Ailsa, Britannia, Meteor
\nand Satanita, and those in the small rater
\nraces were The Saint, Niagara, Samp
\nshire, Audrey, Ptenitent and Isolde.
\nThe big yachts had finished the first
\nround of the course and were just starting
\nupon the second round when suddenly the
\nboats of both classes seemed to have be
\ncome jammed together. The Isolde, which
\nwas sandwiched between two yachts of the
\nlarger class, received a severe blow from
\nthe Kaiser’s yachj: Meteor, causing her
\nmast to snap in two and fall overboard.

\nThe shock was a heavy one, causing the
\nIsolde to careen, and, as she did so, all ou
\nboard of her were spilled Into the sea.
\nWhen Meteor struck the small yacht
\nthere ns great crash, and blocks,, frag
\nments of the broken mast and other parts
\nof the Isolde were sent flying In every di
\nrection.
\nAs soon as the collision took place the
\nother yachts stopped and put out boats to
\nrescue the men struggling in the water.
\non von Zedtwitz, the owner of the
\nIso’iuv, who was on board of his yacht,
\nwas 8 -nek on the head by a. block, or u
\npiece of broken mast, and knocked over
\nboard. lie w \\taken out of the water as
\nsoon as possible and conveyed on board a
\nsteam yacht to the clubhouse at Hyde.
\nBnron von Zedtwitz was unconscious when
\npicked up. lie received every possible
\nmedical attention at Ryde, but he did not
\nregain consciousness and died soon after
\nreaching the clubhouse.
\nA strong wind was blowing at the time
\nof the accident, kicking up a bad sea, and
\nit was raining hard. The Isolde was badly
\ndamaged and was twoed to Portsmouth.
\nThe bowsprit of the Meteor swept her
\ndeck and carried away all of her gear.
\nSeveral members of the Isolde’s crew were
\n?picked up in an exhausted condition.

\nThe crew had some very narrow escapes,
\nbut, fortunately, ail of them were rescued.
\nA sailor belonging to the British gunboat
\nAnt, which was lying at anchor near the
\nscene of the collision, rescued one of the
\nIsolde’s rnpa, who could not have survived
\nthirty seconds longer. The accident cast a
\ngloom over -everything, and the races were
\nabandoned for the day.
\nCaptain Gome*, the skipper of the Meteor,
\nascribes the collision of his vessel with the
\nIsolde to the fact (hat the Britannia did not
\nmake way for the Meteor to pass the Isolde.
\nAll of the clubhouses at Spithead and
\nI.tyde are flying flags at half mast in con
\nsequence of the death of the Baron. As a
\nyachtsman he was a ?ood sportsman and ho
\nwas well liked in all of the English sport
\ning centres. Ills wife, the Baroness von
\n7!odtwltz, w.is daughter of the late
\nCharles Roosevelt, of New York.
\nFestivities Postponed.
\nTo-morrow’s yacht races and the fire
\nworks, with which It was Intended to sig
\nnalize the ending of the Royil Albert Yacht
\nClub regatta at So’.thsea, have been post
\nponed until after the funeral.
\nToe Isolds wan a twwtr-rater yacht.
\nconstructed by the Hcrreshoffs at Bristol,
\nit. I., In 1895, for Prince Leopold of Ger
\nmany, who afterward sold the boat to
\nBaron von Zedtwits.
\nThe Meteor, which is owned by the Ger
\nman Emperor, is a steel cutter of 236 tons,
\nand was built at the Hendersons* yards, on
