The Night Will Soon Be Ending: A Christian Poet in the Darkness of the Nazi State

In researching Advent hymns, I came across this one. It was written in 1937 by Jochen Klepper, a Christian writer who had married a Jewish widow, and saw the Nazi state closing in around them. In the deepest darkness, he looked to the rising of the Sun of Righteousness.

JOCHEN KLEPPER March 22, 1903 – December 11, 1942

Klepper was born in Beuthen an der Oder, Silesia, the son of a Lutheran minister. He originally studied theology at the University of Breslau, but dropped out to become a radio journalist in Berlin before being ostracized by the Nazi Party for his 1931 marriage to Johanna Stein, a Jewish widow with two daughters. He was fired from his work with Berliner Funk in June 1933, and was later fired from Ullstein Publishing House in September 1935. He had written favorably about a Prussian king and the stark contrast to the current German government. The book became very popular and by March 1937, he had lost his license to publish his largely Christian works from the state literary office.

The persecution of the Jews threatened his wife and two stepdaughters. The older girl, Brigitte, managed to leave for England in 1939. Klepper became a soldier that same year, until he was dismissed from the Wehrmacht in 1942 because of his “mixed marriage.” He even negotiated with Adolf Eichmann, the head of the Jewish Evacuation Department in the Reich Security Main Office.

On December 11, 1942, after Eichmann refused a visa for the couple’s second daughter, the three of them committed suicide by turning on a gas valve – Jochen writing in his journal just before they died: Tonight we die together. Over us stands in the last moments the image of the blessed Christ who surrounds us. With this view we end our lives. After their death, the diary was given by Jochen’s sister Hildegard, to the Allied trial against Adolf Eichmann where it was used as evidence against him (Session 51).

God is greater than our heart

As victims of racial hatred

the poet Jochen Klepper and his family went together into death

Forgive us our debts

Here is a performance of Die Nacht is vorgedrungen. Here for women’s voices.

1 Die Nacht ist vorgedrungen,
der Tag ist nicht mehr fern!
So sei nun Lob gesungen
dem hellen Morgenstern!
Auch wer zur Nacht geweinet,
der stimme froh mit ein.
Der Morgenstern bescheinet
auch deine Angst und Pein.

2) Dem alle Engel dienen,
wird nun ein Kind und Knecht.
Gott selber ist erschienen
zur Sühne für sein Recht.
Wer schuldig ist auf Erden,
verhüll nicht mehr sein Haupt.
Er soll errettet werden,
wenn er dem Kinde glaubt.

3) Die Nacht ist schon im Schwinden,
macht euch zum Stalle auf!
Ihr sollt das Heil dort finden,
das aller Zeiten Lauf
von Anfang an verkündet,
seit eure Schuld geschah.
Nun hat sich euch verbündet,
den Gott selbst ausersah.

4) Noch manche Nacht wird fallen
auf Menschenleid und -schuld.
Doch wandert nun mit allen
der Stern der Gotteshuld.
Beglänzt von seinem Lichte,
hält euch kein Dunkel mehr,
von Gottes Angesichte
kam euch die Rettung her.

5) Gott will im Dunkel wohnen
und hat es doch erhellt.
Als wollte er belohnen,
so richtet er die Welt.
Der sich den Erdkreis baute,
der lässt den Sünder nicht.
Wer hier dem Sohn vertraute,
kommt dort aus dem Gericht.

1 The night will soon be ending;
The dawn cannot be far.
Let songs of praise ascending
Now greet the Morning Star!
All you whom darkness frightens
With guilt or grief or pain,
God’s radiant Star now brightens
And bids you sing again.

2 By heaven’s hosts surrounded
A servant he became
His age-old law expounded
For our atonement’s gain
Offenders of all nations
Shall taste of mercies mild
They shall receive oblation
Believing his own child

3 The night will soon be fading
Where Beth’lem’s manger stands
For your release is waiting
Bring incense, ewe and ram
And hear ye all his preaching
Planned from the dawn of time
He beckons, over-reaching
With mercy’s tender chime

4 Yet nights will bring their sadness
And rob our hearts of peace,
And sin in all its madness
Around us may increase.
But now one Star is beaming
Whose rays have pierced the night:
God comes for our redeeming
From sin’s oppressive might.

5 God dwells with us in darkness
And makes the night as day;
Yet we resist the brightness
And turn from God away.
But grace does not forsake us,
However far we run.
God claims us still as children
Through Mary’s infant Son.

William van Duzer Lawrence

William Van Duzer Lawrence (1842-1927) was my wife’s 4th cousin 4 times removed (distant, but traceable). “Removed,” by the way, means a different generation. For example, my uncle’s children are my first cousins. My great uncle’s children are my first cousins, once removed, and so on.

William van D. Lawrence

Van D., as we shall call him, according to Wikipedia

was a millionaire real-estate and pharmaceutical mogul who is best known for having founded Sarah Lawrence College in 1926. He played a critical role in the development of the community of Bronxville, New York, an affluent suburb of New York City defined by magnificent homes in a countrylike setting. His name can be found on the affluent Lawrence Park neighborhood, the Houlihan Lawrence Real Estate Corporation, and on Lawrence Hospital.

The pharmaceutical company was Perry Davis, later Davis & Lawrence, which published a book Nursing the Sick, which achieved mention in Culinary Landmarks: A Bibliography of Canadian cookbooks 1825-1949.

Biblio of Candian Cookbooks

Davis and Lawrence also manufactured “Pain-Killer”

Painkiller Bottle

No Doctor

“”PAIN KILLER” was patented by Perry Davis in 1845. It is believed to be the first nationally advertised remedy specifically for pain – as distinct from a particular disorder. “Pain Killer” was distributed by Christian missionaries around the world Its ingredients, mainly opiates and ethyl alcohol, were entirely natural. No need of doctors (who had a deservedly poor reputation).

Joy

Nothing like organic opium to relieve pain. Narcotics provided a solid foundation to the Lawrence fortune; once you started taking Pain Killer, you never wanted to stop.

As a youth Mark Twain encountered it. In his Autobiography he reminisces:

It was not right to give the cat the “Pain-Killer”; I realize it now. I would not repeat it in these days. But in those “Tom Sawyer” days it was a great and sincere satisfaction to me to see Peter perform under its influence–and if actions do speak as loud as words, he took as much interest in it as I did. It was a most detestable medicine, Perry Davis Pain-Killer. Mr. Pavey’s negro man, who was a person of good judgment and considerable curiosity, wanted to sample it and I let him. It was his opinion that it was made of hell-fire.

Next Van D went into real estate. He founded Bronxville, which was designed for upper-middle class types who wanted a pristine community:

Lawrence Park proudly advertised in House and Garden in 1925: “Restrictions? Yes! Bronxville has been carefully guarded in its development…. The index of desirability has always been character, culture, and the ability to fit easily and naturally into the social scheme.”

As a Protestant minister remarked “Jesus Christ, – himself a Jew – would not be a welcome citizen of communities such as…Bronxville.

bronxville_ny

In 1958 Harry Gersh, using the name of Harry Greenberg, tried to buy a house in the Holy Square Mile, as Bronxville was known.

One real estate agent told him bluntly: “I have to tell you that you wouldn’t be comfortable here in Bronxville. There are no Jewish people in the village.” She only had his best interests at heart:

Some of my best friends are Jews,” she said. “And I wouldn’t want you to be hurt. It’s not even you and your wife so much. You’re probably used to it. But your children. You know how cruel children can be. Think of your son and daughter exposed to the cruelty of the other children.”

Van D. built the Hotel Gramatan in Bronxville

Gramatan

A massive fixture straddled atop Sunset Hill from 1905 until 1972, the Gramatan enjoyed its spectacular heyday in the 1920’s. Developed by real estate mogul William Van Duzer Lawrence, The hotel enjoyed an international reputation of exclusivity, attracting stars such as Greta Garbo, John and Ethel Barrymore, Gloria Swanson, Peaches and Daddy Browning and Theodore Dreiser. Society from all over the world flocked to the Gramatan to rub elbows; its balls and social events serving as mixers for the rich and famous.

Jews were allowed in the hotel.

Sarah Lawrence College was his next major work in 1926. He named it after his wife,

Sarah Bates Lawrence

and built it on his estate. Westlands:

Westlands

From its inception, the college was intended to provide instruction in the arts and humanities for women. Its pedagogy, modeled on the tutorial system of Oxford University, combined independent research projects, individually supervised by the teaching faculty, and seminars with low student-to-faculty ratio.

One of my nieces went there, I shall have to ask her if the tradition of all natural opium continues at the college.

Its architecture leans to Stockbroker Tudor, as we see in the Titsworth and Dudley Lawrence dorms:

Lawrence Dorms

Van D. also founded  Lawrence Hospital after his son nearly died when he fell sick and had to be taken to New York.

Lawrence Hospital

Such are the accomplishments of this Lawrence: a fortune built on opium and real estate, a college, and a hospital.

At present those who try to build fortunes on opium and its equivalents end up in jail or dead, rather than successful philanthropists.

My Prophecy Fulfilled

On March 15, I asked If the Freemasons Come, Can the Jews Be Far Behind?

The answer is by about a month. The Guardian reports:

A furious transatlantic row has erupted over quotes that were attributed to a retired Italian bishop, which suggested that Jews were behind the current criticism of the Catholic church’s record on tackling clerical sex abuse.

A website quoted Giacomo Babini, the emeritus bishop of Grosseto, as saying he believed a “Zionist attack” was behind the criticism, considering how “powerful and refined” the criticism is.

The comments, which have been denied by the bishop, follow a series of statements from Catholic churchmen alleging the existence of plots to weaken the church and Pope Benedict XVI.

Allegedly speaking to the Catholic website Pontifex, Babini, 81, was quoted as saying: “They do not want the church, they are its natural enemies. Deep down, historically speaking, the Jews are God killers.”

Babini is denying ever having said this, so we shall see whether the website Pontifex can prove he in fact did say this – but I would not be surprised if Babini said what a lot of other bishops are thinking.

Shoot Foot, Insert Firmly in Mouth

Is there a school at the Vatican where priests and bishops are taught how to offend everyone?

The NYT reports that the papal preacher, the Franciscan Cantalamessa, compared criticism of the hierarchy to anti-Semitic persecution:

A senior Vatican priest speaking at a Good Friday service compared the uproar over sexual abuse scandals in the Catholic Church — which have included reports about Pope Benedict XVI’s oversight role in two cases — to the persecution of the Jews, sharply raising the volume in the Vatican’s counterattack.

The remarks, on the day Christians mark the crucifixion, underscored how much the Catholic Church has felt under attack from recent news reports and criticism over how it has handled charges of child molestation against priests in the past, and sought to focus attention on the church as the central victim.

In recent weeks, Vatican officials and many bishops have angrily denounced news reports that Benedict failed to act strongly enough against pedophile priests, once as archbishop of Munich and Freising in 1980 and once as a leader of a powerful Vatican congregation in the 1990s.

Benedict sat looking downward when the Rev. Raniero Cantalamessa, who holds the office of preacher of the papal household, delivered his remarks in the traditional prayer service in St. Peter’s Basilica. Wearing the brown cassock of a Franciscan, Father Cantalamessa took note that Easter and Passover were falling during the same week this year, saying he was led to think of the Jews. “They know from experience what it means to be victims of collective violence and also because of this they are quick to recognize the recurring symptoms,” he said.

Father Cantalamessa quoted from what he said was a letter from an unnamed Jewish friend. “I am following the violent and concentric attacks against the church, the pope and all the faithful by the whole word,” he said the friend wrote. “The use of stereotypes, the passing from personal responsibility and guilt to a collective guilt, remind me of the more shameful aspects of anti-Semitism.”

Father Lombardi, the spokesman for the pope, is running for cover:

Father Lombardi said that he personally did not think that criticism of the church could be compared to anti-Semitism.

“I don’t think it’s an appropriate comparison,” he said. “That’s why the letter should be read as a letter of solidarity by a Jew.”

The chief Rabbi of Rome was astonished:

Rabbi Riccardo di Segni, the chief rabbi of Rome, who hosted Benedict at the Rome synagogue in January on a visit that helped calm waters after a year of tensions, laughed in seeming disbelief when asked about Father Cantalamessa’s remarks.

“With a minimum of irony, I will say that today is Good Friday, when they pray that the Lord illuminate our hearts so we recognize Jesus,” Rabbi Di Segni said, referring to a prayer in a traditional Catholic liturgy calling for the conversion of the Jews. “We also pray that the Lord illuminate theirs.”

At the Holy Thursday liturgy in Baltimore, Archbishop Edwin O’Brien began well when he talked about how scoundrels had disgraced the priesthood, but warmed to his topic when he lambasted newspapers for criticizing bishops and the pope.

I see, abuse of children that wrecked their lives and drive some to suicide is parallel to criticism in the press that upsets a cleric.

As O’Brien spoke, I thought of the plagues: “and the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart” – and the archbishop’s. O’Brien’s and Cantalamessa’s remarks are stunning demonstration of clerical narcissism.

Jewish leaders and sexual abuse victims are – I can’t imagine why –  taking offense:

Stephan Kramer, general-secretary of Germany’s Central Council of Jews, described the remarks as offensive and repulsive.

“So far I haven’t seen St Peter’s burning, nor were there outbursts of violence against Catholic priests,” he said.

“I’m without words. The Vatican is now trying to turn the perpetrators into victims.”

Peter Isely, spokesman for the US victim support group Snap, said the sermon had been “reckless and irresponsible”.

He said: “They’re sitting in the papal palace, they’re experiencing a little discomfort, and they’re going to compare themselves to being rounded up or lined up and sent in cattle cars to Auschwitz?

“You cannot be serious.”

Rabbi Gary Greenebaum, of the American Jewish Committee, called Father Cantalamessa’s comments “an unfortunate use of language”.

“The collective violence against the Jews resulted in the death of six million, while the collective violence spoken of here has not led to murder and destruction, but perhaps character assault,” he said.

There is no suffering like unto a cleric’s suffering who has been upset by “unfair” criticism –  it is as bad as being herded into a gas chamber.

Anti-Semitism without Jews

Anti-Semitism has the ability to flourish in the absence of Jews. Reality had never troubled anti-Semites. I remember reading about the world system of a primitive tribe in Central America. Their mental map placed themselves (naturally) at the center, then neighboring tribes, then Spaniards, then Americans and in the outermost fringes and darkness witches and Jews (Not that they had ever met a Jew).

Another primitive tribe in Honduras shows the same tendencies.

Manual Zelaya, an alley of Hugo Chavez  of Venezuela, was ousted. Some call it a coup. He returned to Honduras and took refuge in the Brazilian embassy. One of his supporters is talk show host David Romero, who broadcast:

There are times when I ask myself if Hitler was or was not correct in finishing with that race with the famous Holocaust. If there is a people who do damage in this country, they are Jewish, they are Israelis.

Zelaya himself is on to the subtle ways of the Jewish conspiracy:

In phone calls to the media, Zelaya has charged that Israeli mercenaries had attacked the embassy with high-frequency radio waves and toxic gases.

Perhaps the Jews are broadcasting messages that are being picked up by the fillings in Mr. Zelaya’s teeth.

There are only a hundred Jewish families in all of Honduras, and no one else has noticed the   presence of Israeli commandos in that country.

Mr. Romero is now all tears and claims that he was misunderstood and that he is part Jewish himself.

PS. Obama is supporting Zelaya.

Equal Opportunity Nuttiness

In Honduras it is not just leftists (I will post that when my computer lets me) who like to blame the Jews for everything. After American papers starting in 2002 printed stories about sexual abuse in the Catholic Church, Cardinal Óscar Andrés Rodríguez Maradiaga realized who was behind these attacks (guess):

“It certainly makes me think that in a moment in which all the attention of the mass media was focused on the Middle East, all the many injustices done against the Palestinian people, the print media and the TV in the United States became obsessed with sexual scandals that happened 40 years ago, 30 years ago,” Rodriguez said.

“Why? I think it’s also for these motives: What is the church that has received Arafat the most times, and has most often confirmed the necessity of the creation of a Palestinian state? What is the church that does not accept that Jerusalem should be the indivisible capital of the State of Israel, but that it should be the capital of the three great monotheistic religions?” (see John Allen, The Word from Rome).

Episcopal Foot in Mouth Disease

Archbishop Dadeus Grings

Catholic clerics have not learned that one must be ultra-cautious in making any statement about the Holocaust. Jews are understandably sensitive about anything that tends to minimize their unimaginable suffering.

Archbishop Dadeus Grings of Porto Alegre in Brazil has not learned this lesson.

According to reports here, here, here, and here he has said

The Jews talk about six million people killed. But how many Catholics were victims of the Holocaust? They were 22 million in all.

There were not 22 million killed in the Nazi camps; there were 22 million, probably many more, civilian victims of the war, and I suspect the biggest group of civilian victims was among the Slavic Orthodox. Among Catholics, Poles suffered terribly, and then probably Germans, but Catholics were not the biggest civilian group of victims, either in numbers or proportion.

Grings added

Jews say they were the main victims of the Holocaust, the biggest victims were the gypsies, because they were exterminated.

The gypsies (Roma) were also a target of the Nazis, and it is possible that a greater proportion of gypsies than of Jews was killed by the Nazis– I have not seen any analysis. But the gypsies were not exterminated; there are numerous gypsies (who seem to be mostly Catholic – of a sort) in Europe.

But Grings really inserted and pushed his foot firmly into his mouth when he added

Os judeus têm a propaganda do mundo

The Jews control the world press.

Grings has been at it before. In 2003 he said “one million” Jews were killed by the Nazis:

Sem entrar na questão de número das vítimas, que tem muito de ideológica, é preciso reconhecer, como historicamente comprovado, que o nazismo provocou em torno de 22 milhões de mortes, sendo que os judeus participam desta cifra com cerca de 1 milhão. Portanto a grande vítima do nazismo não foram os judeus, mas os cristãos.

Grings is repeating in 2009 what he said in 2003: Christians, not Jews, were the primary victims of the Holocaust. This is simply not true, and Grings, like Williamson, is providing respectability to anti-Semites. A comment on one Catholic blog was:

It takes courage to speak the truth and this Archbishop has added his name to those like Bishop Williamson who seek the truth and fight against the evils of this world. I have much respect for all of them.

Benedict XVI on the Crimes of the Past

The efforts of victims (and now of a U.S. attorney) to make bishops accountable is often derided as bringing up ancient history (i.e., 1970) or criticized as demonstrating a failure to carryout the great biblical principle of forgive and forget (I have never been able to locate that verse).

Of the Holocaust, Benedict said:

Das Vergangene ist nie bloß vergangen. Es geht uns an und zeigt uns, welche Wege wir nicht gehen dürfen und welche wir suchen müssen.

The past is never really gone. It’s our business and it shows us the way we should not follow and the way we should seek.

Dhimmitude in Germany

German police tore down an Israeli flag because it offended Moslem protestors. When will Germans start arresting Jews and ah, “disposing” of them so that Moslems won’t tear Germany apart? Der Spiegel reports:

Police in the western German city of Duisburg have admitted they removed flags a student had hung in his apartment in support of Israel during a pro-Palestinian protest march in the city. Officers broke down his door and removed the flags. The city’s police chief has issued an apology, but outrage is spreading.

A student had hung Israel flags in his apartment window. He was outside watching the anti-Israeli demonstration.

“Suddenly,” the student explained, “I saw a police officer on the balcony on the second floor” in the apartment located directly beneath his. The officer ripped down the Israeli flag that had been affixed to P.’s balcony. A short time later he witnessed an officer inside his own apartment taking down the flag that had been hung in the bedroom.

The police defended their action:

Initially, Duisburg police defended their actions. In its Monday issue, the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper quoted a police spokesperson stating that the flags had been removed in order to de-escalate a potentially dangerous situation. German news agency DDP quoted the spokesperson on Tuesday saying “the right thing had been done here.”

And the student is afraid to use his apartment, because the police destroyed the door.

On Tuesday, Peter P. said he had obtained the services of a lawyer. He still hasn’t been told who will be held responsible for paying for the door broken down by police.

A small rehearsal for a future Kristallnacht? Italian socialists want to identify all Jewish-owned shops so people can boycott them. The Germans perhaps can supply old Stars of David from war surplus.
